Our carpet legacy begins with Cary Adler, Josh’s father, who started cleaning carpets in Detroit. Cary moved to California in the 1980s and began working for Four Star Cleaning & Restoration. By 1985, he owned 50% of the business. His dedication and work ethic paid off — within 10 years, Cary became the full owner of Four Star Cleaning & Restoration.
In 1995, Cary expanded the business by adding restoration services: water damage, fire cleanup, mold remediation, and construction. He loved the idea of helping people restore their homes, and he liked to say he was in the business of cleaning and restoring homes and lives. This philosophy of service above self became the foundation that Josh would build upon.
Josh’s initial experience working in the family business was far from glamorous. He swept the parking lot and helped with expense reports and receipts. It was grunt work, but he was also learning what owning a business truly entails — the run-of-the-mill reality behind the scenes that makes everything else possible.
Throughout high school, Josh worked after school and during summer breaks to master the skills of the trade. He was learning how to carry on this legacy so what his family built wouldn’t end with his parents’ retirement. Josh went from being an assistant on the trucks to becoming a crew chief, working his way up through hands-on experience. After graduating from high school, he took on the responsibility of running the entire carpet and upholstery division.
In 2012, Cary Adler retired from the business he built and handed the reins to his able, experienced son. From that foundation, Legacy Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning was created. In a way, Legacy Carpet was a new company, but it came from the long-established reputation and heritage of Four Star Cleaning & Restoration. In fact, the logo for Legacy Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning includes four stars as a nod to the roots of the company and the legacy that came before.
Josh credits his now-retired parents for his deep-rooted talents, strong work ethic, and the confidence to start his business.
