5 Eco Friendly Carpet Cleaning Solutions
As leaders in the carpet cleaning industry, we often get asked by our customers about eco friendly carpet cleaning solutions they can use around the home. Luckily for them, we have several favorite green cleaning solutions that we’ve found to work effectively.
1. Vinegar
Vinegar is a must-have staple when it comes to green carpet cleaning. It’s great for cleaning wine, coffee, crayons, glue, ketchup, chocolate, soda – and even mildew. Sound too good to be true? Next time you experience any of the above stains, try using a mixture of 1 cup vinegar and 2 cups water (as long as you use a 1:2 ratio). Remember not to rub your carpet to remove stains, however. Instead, use a sponge or towel soaked in the vinegar solution to dab up the stain. The quicker you get to the stain the better.
2. Corn Meal
Corn meal is good for grease spills, such as those that are likely to occur when cooking. Just take a handful of cornmeal and sprinkle it over the grease spill, making sure to completely cover the area. Let the cornmeal sit for 15-30 minutes, and then either vacuum the cornmeal or go over the area again with your water and vinegar solution. This is definitely a handy eco friendly carpet cleaning solution, and it can prevent you from having to invest in an entirely new section of carpeting.
3. Salt
A little salt can go a long way. And if you are a wine drinker, then salt can be your best friend. No matter how much you love red wine or how often you drink it, you’re going to spill at some time or another. The next time you find yourself having to clean up red wine from your carpet, sprinkle some salt over the area and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Once the salt has turned pink (and absorbed the wine), you can vacuum it up and clean the stain with a vinegar solution.
4. Baking Soda
Baking soda is just as handy as vinegar for cleaning carpets. It’s also great for adding a fresh scent to your rugs and removing musty odors. Use a mixture of baking soda and water to scrub out carpet stains and maintain an eco friendly carpet cleaning solution. When you’re all done, just brush or vacuum up the excess baking soda.
5. Castile Soap
Made from olive oil and sodium hydroxide, castile soap is used for a variety of purposes. Aside from being used as shampoo, dish soap, or body wash, castile soap can also be used as an eco friendly carpet cleaning solution. Just mix ¼ cup of castile soap with 1 cup of water and mix (you can even use a blender to create a nice foam). Use this vegetable-based solution to clean your carpets and remove stains like usual.
